FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

HER VOICE CARRIES THIRD OUTDOOR MURAL ON DOWNTOWN CHURCH
Featuring Safi Osman of Refugees Helping Refugees

ROCHESTER, NY (SEPTEMBER 29, 2017) – Following the installation of two outdoor murals, at Planned Parenthood at 114 University Ave and the Susan B Anthony Neighborhood at 548 West Main St, along with an indoor installation in the Memorial Art Gallery’s Hurlbut Gallery, Her Voice Carries is completing the third of five outdoor murals. This mural will feature Safi Osman, a Somali refugee who helped found Refugees Helping Refugees, an organization that seeks to foster the growth, self-determination, and self reliance of Rochester’s refugee community by making them agents of their own advancement.

Originally from Somalia, Safi has lived in the United States for 20 years. Known as “Momma Safi”, she teaches sewing skills, serves as an emergency translator, and provides transport to refugees in need through Refugees Helping Refugees. Safi is one of the first people refugees call upon for help, day or night.

The mural is located on Reformation Lutheran Church at 111 N. Chestnut Street, where Imani Olear is the pastor and another of the five women currently featured in this project.

“We support Refugees helping Refugees because: God cares for the vulnerable, the oppressed, the poor, the marginalized, the refugee, the foreigner, the widow, the orphan, the social outcast, all who are treated as less than God’s child. And we here at Reformation are commanded to go and do likewise.” – Pastor Imani Olear

Her Voice Carries is nominated for Best Art Exhibit of 2017 by City Newspaper. Artist Sarah C. Rutherford is  nominated for Best Local Artist of 2017. Nominees are determined by write ins sent in from the Rochester community.
